Welcome to Abundance Wimbledon - June 10 2021 Newsletter

Great news is that we are working hard already setting up for a bumper fruit season in 2021.  With the May rains and now the warm weather we are really hopeful that local fruit and vegetables will be in abundance and will enable us not only to pass on some fantastic fruit and vegetables to local community groups and charities but also to make our very popular jams, chutneys, jellies, cordials, cakes, bakes and pies for our Abundance Wimbledon Annual Fruit Day on September 18, 2021.

Would your community group like more information about our activities?

We are all about making sure that everyone in Merton knows about Abundance Wimbledon and our activites (including Annual Abundance Wimbledon Fruit Day).

We have our own Press Release ready and waiting - and if you would also like some photos for your local news publication or website, please email us and we will get it all to you as soon as possible!

Do you know someone who would like to volunteer with us this year?

We are most active in the months of June-mid September which is the ripening season for an array of fruit and vegetables.

We have regular volunteering opportunities available for:
  • Area Coordinators
  • Fruit and Vegetable Pickers
  • Jam/Cordial/Chutney Makers
  • Pie and Cake Makers (For Fruit Day Stall)
  • Plant Donors (For Fruit Day Stall)
  • Fruit Day Volunteers (to wo/man stalls)
For our pickers, as we are visiting people's private gardens, we must adhere to the following important guidelines:  All picking volunteers must:
  • Be 18+
  • Act in a safe and responsible manner
  • Be polite and mindful of each donor's requirements (as advised by their Area Coordinator)
  • Follow any UK Government Guidelines (particularly in relation to Covid-19)
  • Have an appropriate UK drivers license (if volunteering as a driver)
For more information you can email Juliet at [email protected], but if you are ready to sign up now you can download our Volunteer Sign Up Form before emailing it to Juliet.

Check out our new cotton shopping bags in 2021.

Just £2.00 each!We did it!  We have created our own recyclable cotton shopping bags ready for all your Fruit Day goodies!  At just £2.00 each we are delighted with their quality so if you forget your bags (or really just want one of our beautiful ones!) don't forget to grab one at Abundance Wimbledon's Annual Fruit Day (September 18, 2021).  As you know, any profits from our Fruit Day are donated to local charities so you will be supporting them as well as us!

We now have three local locations with Abundance Wimbledon Merton Variety Apple Trees

There are a number of ways Abundance Wimbledon supports our local community:
  • Donations of Fruit and Vegetables to local community organisations and charities
  • Cash donations to local community organisations and charities
  • Planting of trees in local community gardens for the whole community
Over the last few years, we have planted Merton Apple trees in the following locations:
  • Colliers Wood Recreation Ground
  • Sacred Heart Church Grounds
  • Dundonald Recreation Ground
It is all part of our effort to continually engage with our local community and support our community with trees which will provide fruit which is accessible to all.

Whatssup WhatsApp?

We know that may people are prolific users of WhatsApp and it is a great way to keep in touch with our fruit pickers.  This year, we will be setting up area WhatsApp groups to enable our Area Coordinators to quickly get the word out when fruit and vegetables need picking and/or collecting.

In our next issues we will be detailing how you can join the appropriate WhatsApp group so that you can be included in the picking opportunities.  Keep an eye on our website, Facebook and Twitter for the "live" date.

So when do you actually start picking fruit?

I know, this is a pretty obvious answer - when the fruit is ripe!  Having said that, depending on the weather it can be any time from early - mid July and then right up until our Annual Abundance Wimbledon Fruit Day.  So in reality, our picking season is short - and that's why we have to be heads up and ready as soon as fruit ripens so that we can not only ensure we send the "eaters" to the local community groups, but the "jam/chutney" fruit to all the local cooks in time for them to make their produce.  Add into that the last minute need for fruit and vegetables for the cakes, bakes and pies - but don't forget the fresh apple juice too!  So basically we are picking and distributing from early - mid July right through until Fruit Day!

We also chop and freeze a large amount of apples ready for the juicing - just so that we don't waste any donated fruit.  It is really important that we have our volunteers on hand and available so that we can minimise wastage and pick and distribute everything that is offered!

Our next newsletter

We will be back in touch in early July (once picking starts).

Feel free to send any news to our editor - Sally at [email protected].
