Fruit Day - This Saturday!
19 September 2020, 11am - 2.30pm
St Marks Church Hall, St Mark's Place (enter via Compton Road),
Wimbledon SW19 7ND
Abundance Wimbledon Fruit Day is our big event each year for selling jams, chutneys, cakes, freshly-squeezed apple juice local honey and lots more made from unwanted fruit from local gardens. We have the following measures in place (as a minimum) to ensure a safe event for all:
The good news is that we have a plethora of fantastic home made jams, chutneys, cordials, honey, fresh apple juice and cakes available for sale. There will also be something for the children. Hope to see you there!
Jams, Chutney and Cordials Update
Most of the jam making is now complete as the fruit is all picked now.
There were very few plums so we relied on foraging for blackberries and hedgerow fruits to add a sparkle to this year's preserves. We expect to have over 400 jars on offer.
A new addition this year is cordials. We have not had them before but following on from our successful cordials master class last year we decided to add them to the selection of things on offer at Fruit Day.
Sincere thanks (in particular) to Dianne, Robin, Bryony, Jil and Susanna who have been really prolific makers of the jars we have received to date.
Sue is the master of this stall and will be ably supported by her special team of jam and chutney makers!
The prices will be:
There's something for everyone!
Fresh Apple Juice Update
Juliet at her team of volunteers will again be chopping and juicing fresh apple juice (using our manual apple juice press) on Fruit Day.
The prices of the apple juice (to be consumed within 24 hours) will be:
Glass: 50p
500ml: £1.00
750ml: £1.50
Make sure you say hi to Juliet when you pick up your juice! It really is fabulous.
Cake and Pie Bake Stall
Rosie is coordinating our volunteers who will (and have been) busy preparing cakes, bakes, biscuits and pies for our Cake and Pie Bake Stall. We have other volunteers to help with the selling on Fruit Day too.
This year we are in particular need for any gluten free and vegan products so if you are a star at baking those, Rosie would love some donations ready to sell. Please contact Juliet at [email protected] and she will pass on your details.
You can be assured that there will be a plethora of delicious home made delights to buy! Prices will vary according to size but we are keen to keep costs at a reasonable level so everyone can purchase something!
Local Honey is ready to go!
Alison is busy preparing her final jars of Martin Way Allotments Honey. All will be available on Fruit Day with the prices being:
454 gr (one pound weight) jar: £10.00
12 oz jar: £7.50
8 oz jar: £5.00.
Alison's stall will be cash only. Get there early so you don't miss out!
Music Update...
Sadly, the Ukulele Orchestra have had to pull out at the last minute this year. We are disappointed, but excited that they have promised to come back again next year - great news!
In the meantime, we are still looking for a willing musician to brighten our day.

Fruit Day - Saturday 19 September 2020, 11am - 2.30pm St Marks Church Hall, St Mark's Place (enter via Compton Road), Wimbledon SW19 7ND
We have determined (and very excited to confirm!) that it will be safe to continue our 10th Annual Fruit Day (Covid Compliant) activities under the following guidelines (as safety measures for all):
We are all about safety - both for our volunteers and visitors and welcome our community to our special event!
Thankyou Joyce
In January of this year, one of our co-founders Joyce Pountain moved to Glasgow, leaving behind many friends at Abundance Wimbledon. We did have a small celebration for Joyce, but until now, we have not properly and publicly thanked Joyce for her foresight, wisdom and commitment to Abundance Wimbledon since 2011. So Joyce, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou from all of us!
(Joyce is pictured on the left in the photo above)
Its our birthday!
In 2011, Joyce Pountain visited Abundance Chiswick and, supported by good friends Juliet, Joyce (from Transition Town Wimbledon), Daphne (from St Mark’s Church), DeNica (from Wimbledon Park Residents’ Association) and Jo (from the John Innes Society Gardening Group) got together to start an Abundance project in Wimbledon in 2011. Since that day, and with more volunteers joining us each year, Abundance Wimbledon has grown in size and have been committed to rescuing local fruit and vegetables and distributing it (and the profits from our Fruit Day) to local Charities.
In 2020 Abundance Wimbledon celebrates 10 years of rescuing local fruit and vegetables. Happy birthday to us!
What's been picked, from where and by whom?
This is a photo of some apples and crab apples - we had our first pick of crab apples for the season in the last fortnight! So, our totals for the last fortnight are:
Apples: 412 kgs
Pears: 142 kgs
Crab Apples: 11kgs
Plums: 11kgs
Making an amazing total of 535 kgs of saved fruit this fortnight!
Our total for this season is now 1,380 kgs of saved fruit!
Sincere thanks to all our donors:
Jen, Mavis, Jo, Ray, Val, Tom, Leila, Greg, Bob, Ron, June, Chris, Bronwen, Carmel, Ann, Martin Way Allotments, Alison, Robyn, Linda, Anne, Faye, Pippa, Marie, Jan, Mary and Nisha
Thanks also to our amazing pickers:
Jane, Ian, Liz, Mary-Jane, Bryony, Alyson, Melanie, Joan, Tom, Adam, Gilli, Brian, Chris, Cherry, Juliet, Motoko, James, Edward, Alison, Ruth, Mary, Nisha and Rosie.
This fortnight, the following organisations received donations from us:
The rest of the fruit is sent to our teams of jam, chutney, jelly and cordial makers who are hard at work producing great products for our Fruit Day.
If you know a local charity who would be interested in receiving some of the picked fruit - please let us know. We generally have a large abundance of what we call "cooking" apples - not necessarily great to eat but perfect for apple pies and cakes. With many charities cooking meals for the most vulnerable in these Covid-19 times, we are keen to ensure that these apples (and any other fresh produce) does not go to waste. Please email us at [email protected] with their details.
