DEPARTURES & ARRIVALS
The New Year brought with it a few changes within our community group. Sally who had been Abundance Wimbledon’s dedicated Media and Communications Manager for over 5 years made a return to her homeland. Sally’s positivity and enthusiasm will be missed and we thank her very much indeed for all her hard work and dedication in bringing Abundance Wimbledon into the digital age and further growing awareness and local following of our work and mission - we wish her all the best. Her successor, Cristina, (me!) joined in January and has some big shoes to fill!
We are also delighted to welcome Dulcie, who will be coordinating all the fruit picking within the Raynes Park/Wimbledon Chase area, we hope she has an abundant first year.
2022 TREE PLANTING NEWS
In early February Liz, Juliet, John, Jane and Bryony donned their gardening gear to get this year’s Tree Planting underway. Thanks to Jane’s expert knowledge and excellent tree acquisition skills, the Abundance Wimbledon team was able to spread the love by planting 3x different types of apple trees in as many locations: 1x Scrumptious variety at Singleton Close, 1x Sunset variety at Colliers Wood Recreation Ground and 1x Red Devil at Morden Park.
Each year, Abundance Wimbledon plants local variety apple trees in local parks or schools as part of our effort to encourage people to enjoy fresh home-grown fruits and vegetables. And to top it off, we not only plant trees but also keep a close watch on them as they grow and when they bear fruit, we pick the fruit for our jams, chutneys and cordials to be sold on Fruit Day.
A big ‘thank you’ to the team for adding these trees to the local area for all to enjoy watch grow, flourish and hopefully bear much delicious fruit in the years to come. Discussion is already underway as to what to plant in 2023, with a general consensus to broaden the range of fruit trees planted – you could soon be seeing more plums, pears or damsons in the area!
2022 CHARITABLE DONATIONS
We are delighted to confirm that Abundance Wimbledon will be distributing £1,800 from last year’s Fruit Day proceeds among the following local charities:
A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Abundance Wimbledon is made up entirely of volunteers; friendly, enthusiastic people who have a keen interest in their local community, in sustainability and reducing food waste, and in promoting a healthy fruit-filled lifestyle. We are always looking for more volunteers to join our team, in varying capacities.
**THIS YEAR WE ARE IN PARTICULAR NEED OF FRUIT PICKERS**
The commitment can be as big or small to suit your own timetable. If you are interested in taking part, below are some of the ways in which you could help:
ABUNDANCE WIMBLEDON CANVAS SHOPPING BAGS ARE BACK!
