Abundance Wimbledon Newsletter
September 2023

Picture
Welcome to our September newsletter
Fruit picking is well under way across Merton. So far, our brilliant volunteer team have picked apples, pears, damsons, plums, blackberries and rhubarb. The picked fruit has been donated to local charities Faith in Action, Merton & Morden Guild, the YMCA, Hall Place Temporary Accommodation and Sustainable Merton’s Community Fridge. The remainder has gone into making jam, chutney and cakes ready for Fruit Day, including the gorgeous rhubarb cordial (pictured) which was made by Sue. A BIG THANK YOU to all those involved in our Fruit Picks - from donors, to pickers, to those helping transport such vast quantities to the charities and to our jam makers.

Fruit Day 2023
Abundance Wimbledon 13th Annual Fruit Day
SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2023
11.00am - 2.30pm
St Mark's Church Hall & Grounds St Mark's Pl,
Wimbledon,
London
SW19 7ND

Fruit Day is drawing near. As usual there will be stalls aplenty with jams and cakes made from collected fruit, alongside local honey, plants, fun activities, live music, a raffle, and stalls run by local groups. The Children's Area will have a puppet storytelling session for 2- 5 year olds (sign up on the day as places are limited) and refreshments can be purchased from the Forty Acre Forest coffee bike. In short, we have all the ingredients to make it a great day out for all!

Apple press
On Fruit Day you can have a go at making your own delicious freshly squeezed apple juice using our fruit press, all it takes is a bit of elbow grease!

Here is a video of Juliet from Abundance, who tells us more about the fruit press and how to prepare and store apple juice 🍏

Jam jars needed
We collect clean jam jars with lids for our jam and we are grateful for all jars donated.
These are the principles we follow for preparing jars for jam making:
Labels - removed. If labels are stubborn you can use white spirit but, really, there are enough jam jars with more easily removable labels so feel free to put jars with resistant labels in the recycling.
Sniff test - the lid must not remind you of it’s previous produce so no chutney, curry paste, or even former peanut butter jars!
Size – people like to buy 1lb or 8 oz jars of jam, larger jars tend not to sell.

Cake stall
Our cake stall is always popular and the first to sell out.
One of our volunteers followed a Guardian recipe for Apple and Caraway Cake and found it both easy to make and delicious.
