Welcome to the final edition of the Abundance Wimbledon Newsletter for the 2019 season! Yes, sadly the 2019 Abundance Wimbledon season is over, but what an amazing year that we have had. It started with our jam marking, chutney making and liqueur Masterclasses and our new Facebook page, and ended with the most successful Abundance Fruit Day yet. Yes, the tally is in and we raised more than £2,000.00 - ready for distribution to local charities and for the purchase of more equipment to support our volunteers. We are also looking at purchasing fruit trees to be located in a local school garden (similar to what we did last year). So while the season is over, there is still work being done by our dedicated committee.
Speaking of which, if you would like to join the committee and be part of the organising team for Abundance Wimbledon, please send us an email at [email protected]. We always welcome new members - from committee members to pickers, jam and chutney makers, delivery drivers and anything else in between. We would love to hear from you. But, now its time for the season wrap - read on for an update on all the achievements this year!
Topics this fortnight include:
Thanks to all our fruit donors (week leading up to Fruit Day)
We very much rely on our local community for donations of fruit and vegetables to either deliver to local charities or make into produce sold at our Fruit Day each year. This fortnight we sincerely thank Susanna, Ron, June, Jess, Chris, Wimbledon Park Residents Association, Peter, Michael, Caroline, Anthony, Gilli, Brian, Sue, Shirley, David, Judith, Ian, Anton, Ben, Annie, Hannah, Jovita, Graham, Anthony, Caroline, Jan, Brigette, David and Laura for their donations. While this was an amazing achievement, we sadly do need to apologise. We were unable to pick all available fruit as some of our volunteers were unavailable at short notice (and we like to send people out in teams of at least 2 for safety reasons). Please still keep us in mind for any excess fruit in 2020 and we will continue to do our utmost to save as much local fruit as possible. Please don't be disheartened - we would have picked your fruit if we could have!
Our picking season for 2020 will start as soon as the fruit and vegetables ripen - and next year we will be hoping for yet another bumper crop!
Fruit Picking Update
Well done and thanks to Gilli, Brian, Ron, June, Mary-Jane, Cherry, Caroline Sarah Maggie, Joan, Chris, Jackie, Andrew, Bryony, Ian, Kate, Juliet, Adam and Liz. In the week prior to Fruit Day our wonderful pickers picked an incredible 404.5 kgs of fruit, made up of:
What Abundance Wimbledon Volunteers have delivered to our local charities this season
Thank you to our fabulous delivery drivers who managed to deliver a staggering 577.5 kgs of fruit to our local charities so far this season (an extra 75 kgs in the last week prior to Fruit Day). Recipients included:
Wimbledon Guild (54.5 kgs)
Sunshine Recovery Cafe (58 kgs)
Age UK (57 kgs)
Merton and Morden Guild (51 kgs)
Faith in Action Drop In - (87 kgs)
YMCA - (49 kgs)
Food Bank (13 kgs)
New Horizon, Commonside (73 kgs)
FISH (34 kgs)
Lee House (27 kgs)
Central Baptist Church (22 kgs)
Alzheimers Society (3 kgs)
Morden Park Leisure Centre (49 kgs)
What we didn't include in this is the donation post Fruit Day to the Barnfield Riding School, (incorporating their Riding for the Disabled program), where the horses there enjoyed another approximately 10-15 kgs of apples (all fresh and ready to eat). So let's call it around 590 kgs of fruit donated to local charities and services in 2019!
The Fruit Day Wrap
From Sally...
Abundance Fruit Day 2019 was our plan
The stallholders made it fun
Local people came in their droves
For a lovely day in the sun
There were jams, jellies and chutneys for all
A cake stall filled to the brim
The apple juice was a major hit
And the games meant anyone could win
The Mayor opened the day right on time
The ukulele band had our toes tapping
Our volunteers worked non stop all day
Our photographer Laurence was busy papping!
The kids were smiling as they made their pies
The longest peel was won by Joe
There was a team busy chopping apples for juice
The apple press let the juice flow!
The local honey flew off the shelves
Smiles were all around
The plant stall made its mark
Leftover apples were Barnfield stables bound
As the sun set in a clear blue sky
And all was packed away
We sincerely thank one and all
For the best Abundance Fruit Day!
Abundance Fruit Day Photos are on our website!
Sincere thanks to our photographer Laurence, who took an amazing number of beautiful photos from our Fruit day this year. This is Laurence's second year as our volunteer photographer and we absolutely love his work! You can see all the photos on our website.
And we'd like to thank....
I am a bit nervous that I will forget to thank someone, but we must highlight a few people who make Abundance Wimbledon the success it is. Juliet - our fearless co-founder and leader (and the person at the bottom of this newsletter) works closely with the other co-founder Joyce as the main Abundance Wimbledon organisers. Their untiring commitment to our community should be applauded (noting that on Fruit Day, Juliet was there for 12 hours - and she was not the only one!). Juliet and and Joyce are ably and wonderfully supported by the whole committee, and at the risk of missing anyone, I know they would like me to mention Sue (our amazing jams, chutneys and jellies coordinator) and her supporter Rebecca, Alison (bee lady), Penny (Abundance Day Coordinator extraordinaire), Bryony (Secretary, minute taker, picker and jam maker), Liz, Gilli, Carole, Alyson, Rosemary, Barbara, Helina, Jane, Karoline and Lesley (a mix of donors, pickers, delivery people, jam, jellies and chutney makers), and our very own papparazzi - Laurence. We could not have achieved so much without your support this year!
Special mentions to Liz, Gilli, Jane, Carole - our fruit picking organisers (as they are central to the operation and make a big commitment).
Our star fruit picking organiser in Morden and Mitcham can not go without another special mention - sincere thanks to Liz who was single-handedly (with her band of trusty helpers) responsible for collecting 715 kilos of fruit and delivering 289 kilos to charities. Just sensational - thanks so much! Supporting this whole group is an amazing and never-ending band of volunteers who do everything from volunteering throughout the season, making endless jars of jams, jellies and chutneys, our cake and bake makers through to special support on the Fruit Day. We could not do this without you - you are all AMAZING and thankyou!
Thanks to all our stallholders at Abundance Fruit Day
You were awesome! Sincere thanks to all our stallholders:
A BIG Thankyou...

Apples to oranges
Sometimes we just need to think a little outside the square - and of course we always love a good news story and a chance to thank those going the extra mile in our community!
"Just back from picking. Ekaterina and I picked 32 kg pears in Jan's garden. Delivered 4kg pears to Wimbledon Guild. They gave me loads of oranges from Marks and Spencer. So I then took those to the Drop in Centre, not part of Abundance but they were delighted."
Thanks Juliet, Kate, Wimbledon Guild and Marks and Spencer. This is true community spirit at its best - with all involved deserving of a special mention for their support of our local community. Magnificent!
Message from Sarah
Sarah tried out the German Apple Cake recipe from our last newsletter and sent us through this great little message. Just had to pass it on!
"Thanks for the cake recipe! I picked dessert apples with Juliet yesterday, keeping some for my family, and my teenage daughter made the cake with them after school. Delicious."
Apple and Cardamon Cake - A recipe
I can honestly say that I have made this cake - and it is a hit! The cardamon adds extra flavour and kept everyone guessing as to what the secret ingredient was...
The original version of the recipe can be found here at www.waitrose.com
Serves: 10-12
Ingredients
125g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
20 cardamom pods (or 1½ tsp ground cinnamon)
150g caster sugar
2 eggs
130g plain flour, sifted
30g ground almonds
1 tsp baking powder
¾ tsp fine sea salt
1 lemon, zest, 1 tbsp juice
3 apples, such as estivale or Suffolk pink, peeled
1 tbsp demerara sugar
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 170˚C, gas mark 3. Grease and line a 20cm round, deep cake tin. Break open the cardamom pods, extract the seeds and grind them to a powder in a pestle and mortar; set aside. Using electric beaters, beat the butter and caster sugar together until light and fluffy. Slowly beat in the eggs, flour, ground almonds, baking powder, salt, lemon zest and juice, and ½ the ground cardamom (or cinnamon), until fully combined. The mixture will be quite stiff. Transfer to the lined tin and level out.
2. Quarter the apples and slice away the cores. Put cored-side down on a board and make thin parallel cuts into each piece, without cutting all the way through, so that they remain intact (like a hasselback potato; see picture). Position the apple quarters in circles on top of the cake (cutting down to size if necessary).
3. Stir together the demerara sugar and remaining cardamom (or cinnamon); sprinkle over the top of the cake. Bake for 55 minutes-1 hour 5 minutes until deep golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Check after 45 minutes; if browning too quickly cover with foil. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then lift out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

So where does all the money raised by Abundance Wimbledon go?
Money raised at Fruit Day is used to finance the Abundance Wimbledon. Most of the spending has been on buying equipment, paying for publicity and insurance. Abundance Wimbledon has a fruit press & crusher, 16 fruit picking poles and tubs, plus spoons, stationery etc. The main aim of Abundance Wimbledon is to make good use of fruit that would otherwise go to waste and any surplus funds are donated to local good causes.
