2021 Season Wrap
19 October 2021
Welcome to Abundance Wimbledon - 2021 Season Wrap
Wow! What a season! What a Fruit Day!
Firstly, a sincere apology that this has taken longer to write, but we had our last pick just last week and it really has been a bumper season! Also, this newsletter is a little different as we have messages from many of our committee members and links to a lovely video that Juliet did about Abundance Wimbledon. There is so much to thank people for - particularly our Abundance Wimbledon community for their support - from our donors, pickers, drivers, jam/chutney/jelly/cordial makers, cake and bake makers. pie makers, honey suppliers, juicers, stall holders, community groups who support us. local politicians (MPs, Councillors, Mayor), musical groups and of course all our committee members.
A special thank you must go to Mark and Paul - from Paul Gapper Photography. You will notice their work throughout the newsletter (see photo credits) and I am sure you will agree that they really do tell the story of the day. So thank you Mark and Paul for yet another great year of your support.
This is the eleventh year of Abundance in Wimbledon, Wimbledon Park, Mitcham, Morden, Motspur Park, Raynes Park and adjoining areas. Every year has been different and has its own surprises.
Following a year of London lockdowns and impacts of Covid-19 we have managed to encourage new local people into being involved. More people have opened their gardens to us for picking their unwanted fruit, more people have joined in picking the fruit and of course Sue’s 2 Jam Masterclasses were full this year – also encouraging people to be involved in our activities.
Our call outs for support has resulted in a number of new volunteer faces which we are delighted about. It is great to see more young people involved and learning about what we do at Abundance Wimbledon - both during the season and on Fruit Day.
This year has seen us plant apple trees in Colliers Wood Recreation Ground (in February this year) and our plan is to plant 3 more apple trees in community locations later on this year.
We exceeded our target to reach 1,500kgs of saved fruit (read below for all the statistics!). Our 2021 saved fruit figures are well above last year – incredible given the mild summer and the fact that a lot of fruit (particularly pears) had not ripened by Fruit Day. We have had lots of apples and plums and a few other fruits into the mix.
Based on the mild summer we are delighted that we have had our second best year ever! Thank you to all.
A new initiative this year has been the design and manufacture of our own Abundance Wimbledon cotton tote bags. We have sold quite a few and they are a great addition to our fund and profile raising efforts.
There have been limited occasions when we could not pick the fruit and charities and jam-makers have not been able to take anymore. We do apologise to people who have kindly offered their fruit, but we have not been able to accept it. As a volunteer organization we do our best and hope that you will think of us again in 2022!
On a personal note, this will be my last newsletter and I am truly thankful that Juliet introduced me to the Abundance Wimbledon community just 3 years ago. It has been a blast and our social media presence has made a big impact locally. We are looking for a new social media coordinator and I will shortly be doing up a job description. For 3 months of the year, the commitment is about a day a week (max) but the rest of the year the commitment is pretty minimal. Please email Juliet at [email protected] if you would like to take over this volunteer position.

Juliet talks about Abundance Wimbledon
Sally has written a brilliantly comprehensive final newsletter which really highlights every aspect of our community project. As with all her previous newsletters, she encourages great enthusiasm from all our volunteers, old and new.
We owe a debt of gratitude to all donated their fruit, all who picked and distributed the fruit and all who volunteered in such a wide variety of ways. A personal thank you from me to all those in my area - Wimbledon - for making this year such a success and being such passionate supporters of Abundance Wimbledon.
St Mark's Church Hall and Garden provide the perfect venue for Fruit Day and it is a real pleasure to see people enjoying the occasion. My thanks go to all at St Mark's who support this event each year.
The apple-pressing stall is very labour-intensive and involves real teamwork. Apples need to be cut up and crushed before pressing. The juice then has to be bottled, labelled and sold. The press always attracts attention from young and old who like to "have a go". This was my 11th Fruit Day and I'm looking towards handing over the organisation to younger people.
My special thanks go to Sally and we send her our best wishes as she prepares to return to Australia. She will be a very hard act to follow. I'd also like to express my appreciation to Bryony and the whole Abundance Wimbledon committee for such loyal and willing support.

Gilli's Message from Motspur Park
I always love fruit day and the happy weeks of fruit picking that proceeds the actual day.
My initial visit to Abundance was at the FIRST fruit day. I was the Mayor of Merton at the time and was so impressed with the concept that I am still there.
This year I was more excited than usual. I think it was because we had all spent many months in ‘lockdown’ and this year was approached with a real sense if freedom and joyfulness.
There is no doubt that the full use of social media platforms has vastly improved the recognition of this great organisation but I really believe that lockdown brought out the best in us. It has taught us to care and support others (well most of us probably did anyway - but sometimes we forget.)
We really appreciated being out in the open air and realising that the simple things in life are often the best and usually free.
I really look forward to next year’s Abundance and I am sure it will be even bigger- So I look forward to seeing you there.

Liz's Message from Mitcham and Morden
The start of Abundance picking, in the middle of July this year, is always a nice time to reconnect with picking friends who have come out of hibernation. Several not seen since last year. It is equally good to catch up with fruit donors who kindly allow us again into their gardens to see what the season has brought. In some cases these are gardens and people we have been seeing for many years.
There is always the slight worry that perhaps a tree and its fruit has become too much and has been chopped down. Sadly this year that happened to a pear tree in a communal garden which we have been picking plentiful delicious pears from for several years. Why it was removed we still don’t know.
As the season progressed and the fruit requests started to pile up we split ourselves into two or three person teams, sometimes picking at the same time in different locations. This worked very well.
To ensure we could deliver the fruit to charities on our list it was fantastic to have the help of Ian who was happy to drive to all points of the compass in Merton. Thank you again Ian.
Thank you to everyone in the picking team, whether you are our Cycling Warrior Adam, searching out fruit in remote locations or Bryony trying out her bike app, Sarah our new team member and now apple crumble maker and Joan, super blackberry locator. Thank you also to Alyson for joining us, Angela for her early help picking wild plums and Karoline for her understanding when timings got confused. Many thanks to Mary-Jean for being prepared to travel to Beddington in search of pears and being a regular visitor to SM4 to collect poles and trugs and returning almost daily the picked fruit ready for distribution.
It’s also great to hear from new people who are happy to donate their fruit for the first time. Thank you Alice, Martha and Richard, Stephanie and James.
We hope to see you all again in 2022.

Alison's Message from Martin Way Allotments
Major thanks to Jane L who single handedly picked many of my allotment apples this year!
Our honey stall went well as usual, however due to a relatively low honey yield this year we sold out of honey by 12.30 ooops. And that was even though we tended to limit purchises to one or two jars per person/family to try to be fair. So apologies to anyone who missed out this time around, we hope for a better honey yield next time! You may like to know that we always leave plenty of honey on each hive for the bees themselves to eat over the winter months. Although we ran out of honey early, my colleague David had plenty of his beautiful candles which were very popular.
Thanks as ever to everyone who came to out stall as it is always so lovely to see people year on year, plus of course any new visitors. Looking forward to seeing you all again next Fruit Day!

Jane's Message from Wimbledon Park
The Wimbledon Park fruit picking group enjoyed a good season this year. The picking season started later than expected, probably due to the cold wet spring delaying the flowering and pollinating processes. For the first pick we joined Liz’s group in the Merton Park area helping to pick plums from the street trees, although we enjoyed eating many as we picked, the majority went to the Abundance jam makers. Mandy and Steve contacted me to arrange for us to pick their crab apples, Lucy helped with this task and the fruit was made into jelly and jam, a second flush was picked by Mandy herself. Louise invited us to pick her cooking apples, these went to The Wimbledon Guild, The YMCA, some were distributed amongst friends and neighbours, and I believe Louise made apple pies for her family. Rebecca contacted me to collect some apples that she had picked, these went to make juice which was made and sold at Fruit Day. Razia invited us to pick her eating apples which were distributed locally and also used to make juice at Fruit day. We picked apples and pears at Victoria’s house which was helped by discussions with her daughter about the local wildlife. In Simon’s garden we managed to pick 18kg eating apples for juicing at the Fruit day, the rest were destined to be eaten by his 2 year old twins, very keen fruit eaters!
We thank all those who donated their fruit to ensure it didn’t go to waste, and we thank the pickers who gave their time and energy. We look forward to meeting you all again over another bumper harvest.
Durnsford Rec Community Fruit Hedge yielded lots of delicious plums and damsons, a few greengages and quince. Some were donated to The Wimbledon Guild, others to the Abundance jam makers, and, of course, many were enjoyed by the neighbours who walked past and stopped to chat as we picked. Our thanks for the success of this hedgerow go to Pam, who drives its development, and other members of the Wimbledon Park Residents Association who donate their time and expertise in maintaining the hedge.

Sue's Message from the Jams, Jellies, Chutneys and Cordials Stall
Fruit Day once again was a lovely sunny day and as the doors opened the queue snaked long down the road. We had the new Abundance Bags at the door to tempt people in to taking one to fill with jars.
Setting up was helped enormously by Kiran's son and his friends who helped with the heavy trays of jars and helped to set them out on the table in fruit type category.
The cordials were popular again and we sold all 68 bottles. It was lovely to see familiar faces coming back year after year to have a look at what we had to offer. We also see a lot of the jam makers who we don't get to see other than at fruit day but whose contributions are so important to our collection of jars on offer.
There was a feeling of Abundance this year as although the harvest was late there was a lot of it. We had a lot of plums and apples were in huge heaps everywhere. It was great to once again have record takings at the jam stall which, with added sales after the day, now comes to £1,325. A huge thanks to all those jam makers who contributed. We are always keen to welcome new people to come and join us so if you would like to become a jam maker please let me know via our website or Facebook page we have Jam Making classes and are happy to help with advice when necessary.

Rosie's message from the Cake Stall
Thanks to all you wonderful bakers who made and donated delicious cakes and the volunteers who helped to sell them on Fruit day.
Many of the cakes used apples and pears picked by Abundance volunteers from trees around Merton - minimal food miles clocked up from tree to table!
There were some real 'show stopper' cakes and this year we were also able to offer bread, vegan and gluten free cakes.
We try and thank everyone but Cake makers are a modest and generous bunch! Please do let us know who you are so we can thank you and also match consumers with makers to share recipes for such tasty bakes - if you want to send any recipes to share and practice for next year they would be very welcome.
Thanks to: Veda, Maggie, Amanda, Sarah, Jil, Susan, Carolyn, Di, Karoline, Merel, Barbara, Liz, Shirley, Anne, Ann, Rosie.
Apologies if I have missed anyone out.

We were sorry about the queues.. For next year we have a solution!
Thank you to everyone who attended our Fruit Day and as you know, at the end of each season we review what we do and come up with ideas on how we can do better!
Prior to the Covid restrictions, we had little worries with queues. People could come and go as they please. In an effort to ensure safe practices this year, we did restrict entry via a one-way system into the hall first to ensure everyone's safety.
We do recognise that this resulted in significant queues and next year we will do better! As a start, we are swapping payments from a central cashier system back to individual stalls. This will stop the queue at the cashiers and give stall holders more control over the way they record the sales. We will continue to take both cash and card payments but this will reduce the block at the exit to the hall.
If you have any other ideas - please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected]

Our Fruit Drop off on Fruit Day was a hit!
This year, we advertised that people could drop off their extra fruit on Fruit Day. This was a great success with between 75-100kg of fruit dropped off - with much of it used in the apple press for the fresh apple juice.
We did also sell some fruit to guests - another great way to ensure that nothing goes to waste.
At the end of Fruit Day, there were quite a few apples left over and these were re-distributed into the community.

Thanks to all who bought along their own bottles for the fresh apple juice
For the first time this year we trialled asking people to bring their own (clean, glass 500ml or 750ml) bottles that we could fill with our freshly pressed apple juice. Uptake was slow - but we think this is due to the fact this was a last minute option! So for next year, save up your bottles and we will fill them! All part of our efforts to encourage a sustainable event for our visitors.

Thank you to the Colliers Wood Ukulele Orchestra
It was a delight to welcome back the Colliers Wood Ukulele Orchestra again this year - after a one year, Covid-induced absence. Sincere thanks to all the orchestra members for entertaining us with some great songs and lively music!

Thank you to Songs on Wheels
Returning in 2021 were our friends from Songs on Wheels - playing classic, toe tapping and nostalgic songs we really enjoyed their musicality and fun - all adding to the atmosphere on Fruit Day. We particularly loved their snazzy hats too!

Thanks Bryony
Our erstwhile Secretary Bryony deserves a special mention this year. Not only does she keep us all on track at meetings (and with her great minute taking), but Bryony is the force behind Fruit Day. it is all thanks to Bryony that the Fruit Day organisation is such a success - everything from booking groups to coordinating volunteers, organising stall placement and the day's schedule. So hat's off to you Bryony. Our sincere thanks.

Thank you to our Juliet
As you can see, it is hard to get a photo of Juliet as she is rarely in the same place twice! Not only is Juliet our Abundance Wimbledon co-Founder and Chair, but she is also a picker, donor, Stall Coordinator (Fruit Juice Stall) and an indefatiguable part of our whole group. Just answering all the emails and questions is a massive job in itself! With the second highest number of picks by an individual under her belt this year, we are delighted that next year, Juliet will be sharing the load with other new volunteers. Eleven years of commitment at Abundance Wimbledon is to be applauded and that is what we are doing now. Thank you Juliet. You are an inspiration!

How much money was raised on Fruit Day 2021?
The short answer - an incredible £2,320.00 - our highest total ever!
As you will see below, we pay the expenses and then monies are donated to local Charities each year. We will determine the distribution at our next meeting in February 2022.
Please know that the amount we raise is not our main focus! We are all about minimising waste and doing our best to ensure that the local community benefits in a range of ways from our activities. Next year, we hope to bring back pie making for the children - it doesn't make a lot of money but is a great activity to get the children interested in their food and where it comes from.

Juliet's story about her missing trug...
Juliet put the above trug of apples outside her front gate. She was delighted that all the fruit was taken - but a little perturbed when the trug went too! So, being a positive person, Juliet wrote a polite note on the gate and asked for the trug to please be returned - and lo and behold it was! Thanks so much to the anonymous person. Much appreciated.
