Save the date!
Abundance Wimbledon, 11th Annual Fruit Day

11.00am - 2.30pm
St Mark's Church Hall & Grounds

St Mark's Pl, Wimbledon, London SW19 7ND

Innovations from Fruit Day 2020 which will continue

There were a number of new initiatives we trialed in 2020 which we will be continuing in 2021:
  • Cashier stations taking credit card payments - this was a huge success in 2020 and made life much easier for all our visitors
  • Shopping baskets from Morrisons - again a sincere thank you to our local Morrisons Supermarket in Wimbledon who loaned us their wire shopping baskets.  We will be approaching them again this year to do the same (fingers crossed!)
  • Invitation to other like-minded community groups to join us
  • We are unsure of what will be required in relation to social distancing, sanitising and other "covid-safe" measures but we will continue to follow all guidelines

Look out for our new canvas shopping bags in 2021

We are investigating the purchase of Abundance Wimbledon branded canvas shopping bags to be available for customers in 2021 (the above is not the actual one!).  These bags will be there to enable people to take all their goodies home safely and are a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.  We are unsure of costs, but any profits from these bags will continue to support Abundance Wimbledon initiatives - including our yearly donations to local charities and of course our annual apple tree planting program (see photos below).

Our latest tree planting - Colliers Wood Recreation Ground

In mid February,  we planted some Merton Apple Trees at the Colliers Wood Recreation Ground!

Each year, Abundance Wimbledon plants local variety apple trees in local parks or schools as part of our effort to encourage people to enjoy fresh home-grown fruits and vegetables. And to top it off, we not only plant trees but also keep a close watch on them as they grow and when they bear fruit, we pick the fruit for our jams, chutneys and cordials to be sold on Fruit Day.

Sincere thanks to the team (lead by our own Juliet and husband John) who sourced and planted these apple trees in the Colliers Wood Recreation ground. We are looking forward to watching them grow abundantly!.

Thanks also to Derek for the photos www.dereklomas.com

Volunteering Opportunities 2021

With this being our 11th Annual Fruit Day season, a number of our loyal volunteers are hanging up their picking poles and aprons!  We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers and if any of the following roles are of interest to you please don't hesitate to contact Juliet at [email protected]
Specifically we are looking for:
  • Committee roles (a couple of vacant positions)
  • Area Coordinators
  • Social Media Coordinator (you will have the opportunity to work alongside the current coordinator in 2021, then take over for 2022 and beyond)
  • Jam, chutney, cordial and jelly makers
  • Cake and pie makers
  • Pickers
  • Drivers
  • Volunteers on Fruit Day (including stall holders, marshalls, apple cutters and juicers, etc)
The commitment can be as big or small to suit your own timetable.  Picking season is generally July - September.  There are approximately 4 committee meetings per year and a variety of roles within the committee depending on your interests.

This is a fabulous local community group and we love welcoming new members to the team!

Our next newsletter

We will be back in touch in May 2021.

Feel free to send any news to our editor - Sally at [email protected].

** To get in touch about any of the above, please just reply to this email **

Best wishes and sincere thanks from us all

Juliet and the team at Abundance Wimbledon
