MARMALADE MAKING
We started 2025 with successful marmalade making sessions run by Liz.
Marmalade is always popular and sells well at Fruit Day. In late January and early February Liz ran two lively classes that gave enthusiasts a thorough understanding of the principles of marmalade making. Both were held at Trinity Church's Mansell Centre and both had 6 participants who between them made over 50 jars of Marmalade to sell on Fruit Day (as well, of course, as samples to take home!).
When fruit picking is underway, there will be a repeat course focussed on Windfall Marmalade. This delicious preserve uses windfall apples, grapefruit and lemon to create a delicious and unique marmalade.
JAM-MAKING MASTERCLASS IN MAY
This very popular class will run again in mid-May and as in previous years will be run by Sue Lovell-Greene. Relaxed and friendly, the course will give you the skills you need to wow your family and friends with homemade preserves (perfect gifts!).
The hands-on course is held in SW18, costs £30 and lasts 3 hours. The class will include all ingredients. You will make 3 kinds of jam and be able to take home a jar of each.Everyone is asked to bring their own jars and containers and places are limited to 6 per course.

JAM JARS NEEDED
As you can imagine, every year Abundance Wimbledon requires a huge number of jam jars for the jam, marmalade, chutneys etc that are made by our wonderful volunteers. We are very grateful to everybody who donates clean jam jars.
This is what we do to prepare the thoroughly washed jars:

This is what we do to prepare the thoroughly washed jars:
- Remove labels: If the label is stubborn you can use white spirit, but there are generally enough jars with easily removable labels, so feel free to put those with resistant labels in the recycling.
- Sniff test - the lid must not remind you of the original produce. So for example, no smell of chutney, curry paste or peanut butter!
- Size - people like medium or smaller jars of jam, large jars tend not to sell.
